MY PRIORITIES

MY PRIORITIES

The Liberal Democrats will be a stronger force following the general election, with an increase in our MPs in parliament. We will work hard on the priorities in our communities, to fight for our constituents and hold those in government to the highest scrutiny. A simple guarantee from me, an MP that will pledge the focus we have so desperately missed.

As your representative, these will be my top priorities to fight for Maidstone & Malling:

My Priorities

  • Strengthen Health and Social Services for All

The Conservatives have put the NHS on its knees. There is no longer a safety net for those in our community struggling physically, mentally or socially. Our fully costed £9 billon plan will save our health and social care from the crisis it is in.

    An NHS Working For You

By providing the vital support that our NHS needs, we can get people back into work to boost our economy and have a health, thriving country. We will:

-Strong drive in recruitment, including 8000 GPs to provide vital primary care in communities.

-Reform NHS dentistry so people have accessibility to the urgent and emergency care they need.

-Give mental health care the attention it needs, and improve early access for young people.

-Boost cancer survival rates and introduce a guarantee for 100% of patients to start treatment within 62 days from urgent referral.

    Social Care

Social care is also in a state of crisis. Too many people are not receiving the vital care they need due to costs and lack of staff available. Carers are not valued and families are struggling with providing the support that their loved ones need. Social care needs urgent focus:

-Introduce free personal care based on the model introduced by the Liberal Democrats in government in Scotland in 2002, so that provision is based on need, not ability to pay.

-Create a social care workforce plan, establish a Royal College of Care Workers to improve recognition and career progression, and introduce a higher Carer’s Minimum Wage.

-Establish a cross-party commission to forge a long-term agreement on sustainable funding for social care.

  • Tackle the Housing Crisis

It is no mystery that we are facing a housing crisis. Inappropriate housing is putting a strain on our communities and infrastructure, house prices are out of reach for so many, and many people in housing agreements are not getting the fair deal they deserve.

    We must tackle this crisis.

    Inappropriate developments

Maidstone & Malling has fallen victim to inappropriate housing, putting severe strain on our infrastructure and threatening our countryside. The approach to housebuilding has ignored the necessities of bringing infrastructure first, protecting our environment, and working collaboratively with communities.

The Conservatives have imposed inappropriate targets which do not involve the planning abilities to help local authorities work with residents and communities.

As your MP I will fight against this:

-Ensure any development has appropriate infrastructure, services and amenities in place. Integrate infrastructure and public service delivery into the planning process.

    -Expand Neighbourhood Planning

-Encourage development of existing brownfield sites, in order to protect our green spaces.

I will continue my efforts in campaigning against inappropriate developments, such as those currently proposed in Allington and Ditton. Find out more here, and here

    Affordable, Fair Housing

The South East is suffering from extortionate house prices, as the Conservatives have failed in building affordable, quality homes. Even the inappropriate developments that are overcrowding Maidstone & Malling are not affordable.
Many residents renting or in leasehold agreements are not getting a fair deal. The Conservatives have got it all wrong.

For an affordable and fair housing market we will call for:

-Increase home building across the UK, including 10 new garden cities, and give councils an increased ability to build social housing in communities.

-Introduce a new Rent to Own model for social housing, so rent payments give tenants an increasing stake in the property.

-Abolish residential leaseholds and cap ground rents to a nominal fee, so that everyone has control of their property.

  • Economy

The Tories have ruined our economy, both locally and nationally, leaving so many families without the support and resources they need.

A growing economy comes as a result of having a thriving population, who are supported and provided with a fair economic environment in order to prosper.

We will strongly campaign and fight for this to be the case:
-Support with energy bills by imposing a proper, one-off windfall tax on the super-profits of oil and gas producers/traders.

-Further support by cutting energy bills through an emergency Home Energy Upgrade programme.

-Reverse the Conservative tax cuts for the big banks.

-Invest in green infrastructure, innovation and skills to boost economic growth and create good jobs.

-Fairly reform capital gains tax to close the loopholes that are exploited by the super-wealthy.

-Tackle rising food prices through a National Food Strategy

    Local Economy
A key focus for me will be to boost our local economy. We support our high streets where businesses can flourish, and also to our local industries so we can showcase some of the excellent industries we have in our area.

As your local MP, I will support our local economy:

-Provide businesses, big and small, the best chance to thrive by abolishing business rates with a Commercial Landowner Levy.

-Allow councils the ability, funds, and resources to invest into high streets such as Maidstone and West Malling to make them places where people want to enjoy their time.

-Support and showcase some of our excellent local industries such as breweries and farmers with investment and fair regulations.

-Work with local businesses to create more apprenticeship opportunities so young people to can get into work quickly, become skilled workers, and support the local economy but adding productivity to local businesses.

As the elected MP, I will ensure I fight to support people with their bills, create a fair economic environment, and an economy that will bring stability to Maidstone & Malling.

  • Protect our Environment

With Maidstone & Malling at the heart of the Garden of England, we are fortunate to have some fantastic natural features and open spaces. We must fight to protect and also enhance our environment.

    End The Sewerage Scandal

Privatised water companies have vandalised our waters, and the Tories have consistently voted together in not holding these groups accountable.

All the while sewerage is being pumped into our waterways, they continue to raise your bills.

During my time as Mayor, I was proud to be able to revive the Maidstone River Festival in 2019, and have continued to organise it since. The River Medway is a gem that flows through our constituency, and should not have sewerage damaging its quality.

We need tougher regulator than OFWAT, and we will call for a ban on the bonuses these bosses reward themselves with for vandalising our waters, The Tories have no intention in holding these companies accountable.

    Invest Into Our Environment

By providing more funding to the Environment Agency and Natural England, we will provide more resources to enhance our environment and make it accessible for our community to enjoy.

By investing in our environment, to protect and enhance it, we can ensure our precious green and open spaces do not become concrete wastelands. We must work with the necessary authorities and provide the support to ensure Maidstone & Malling can enjoy the fantastic open spaces we are lucky to have.
